At Windows Margaret River we believe that great wines begin in the vineyard and the wines produced allow the exquisite quality of the fruit to speak for itself.
THE NAME
The name Windows Margaret River was derived from a well known surf break "The Window" (see above picture) which is in close proximity to the Estate. The Margaret River area is well known for it's stunning, untouched coastline, we wanted to celebrate this unique feature of the area whilst also acknowledging the influence that the ocean has on the style of wines produced here at Windows Margaret River.
THE ESTATE
The Estate is situated in the Northern section of the Margaret River Wine Region on the corner of Caves and Quininup Roads.
VINEYARD
There is currently 15 acres under vine on the 120 acre Estate comprising of:
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot
- Shiraz
- Chardonnay
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Semillon
- Chenin Blanc
Minimal intervention is employed in the vineyard, with a focus of assisting nature, not dominating it.
SOIL
The soil composition on the Windows Margaret River property is complex and unique to the
Margaret River wine region. The soil comprises of red brick, free draining loam on the
surface, over gravel, with a clay base which allows control over the water intake of the
vines. The vines are dry block grown to ensure concentrated fruit flavours on small
bunches with small berries whilst maintaining control of vegetative growth. Irrigation is
available if needed.
CLIMATE
Margaret River’s climate is similar to that of the Bordeaux region in France. Cool to cold wet winters are followed by warm, dry summers which is excellent for fruit ripening. The ocean is present on three sides of the region and resides only 1.5km West from the Windows Margaret River vineyard. This produces cooling sea breezes in the summer months creating an optimum fruit ripening environment for our vineyard, through a decrease in temperature and humidity.
